The Geotechnical and Structural Monitoring concept can be applied to a model that consists of monitoring during the construction up to monitoring during the life cycle, with a shift from a local point of view to a global and holistic perspective. But what is the trend and how will this technology evolve in the future? In this overview it will be possible to review and meditate about the current situation of monitoring technology, our expectations from the industry and what the future will bring us, with an eye on predictive maintenance, global monitoring and smart hazard assessment.

The general approach to monitoring instrumentation – contact and remote -is presented with specific reference to the need for a systematic approach to planning monitoring programmes. Reference is made to the need for common references such as Standards, guidelines, technical literature, magazines.

• Structural health and geotechnical monitoring for offshore wind

Per Sparrevik

With the objective to reduce the climate changes the investments in emission free offshore wind power are growing rapidly at an annual rate of 30% with more than 10 000 offshore wind turbines in operation around the world in the near future. Huge investments are made to develop the offshore wind farms and the foundations represent a significant part of the costs. By means of monitoring the load response and operational behaviour, the design can be verified and optimized for future wind farms. Recorded data from the field plays an important role in the continuous development, pushing the limits for turbine size and water depths for bottom fixed foundations. Structural health monitoring also provides important data about early signs of progressing degradation and gives input for condition-based maintenance and possible life time extension or upgrades (bigger turbines…etc.). The key parameter to be monitored is the dynamic response of the structure and foundation as well as corrosion rates and load histories to assess the remaining fatigue life. By means of combining field measurements with analytical models "digital twinning", the in-situ performance of the foundations in operation can be assessed using data from less extensive instrumentation. To assess the condition of older installations there is a demand for smart instrumentation solutions that easily can be retrofitted. Although barely visible from the shore, huge operations and amazing construction works are ongoing around the world to harvest the "green" wind energy, field instrumentation and data are important tools in this development.

• Line C – The comparison between the design predictions and the experimental data acquired by the monitoring system installed on the monuments of the historical center of Rome during TBM excavation

The contract T3 of Line C is 2.8 km long. It runs under UNESCO World Heritage site of Rome. Metro C has carried out several detailed studies to analyse the potential interactions between the line and the monuments, in order to identify the most appropriate mitigation measures for theirs protection. Monitoring has allowed to highlight a very good match between the design predictions and the measurements obtained during the TBM tunnels construction.

The importance of geotechnical and sctructural monitoring for railway assets management

Most of the actual 17.000 km of Italian railway line have been built before 1950 and due to the orography host more than 1.500 kilometers of tunnels and more than 3.000 kilometers of bridges and viaducts. The geological and geotechnical characteristic of soils and rocks and the seismicity degree of the peninsula are often very demanding. Specific design approach have therefore to be adopted to withstand the above complexity and the new one that are overcoming connected to climate change. An important role in managing the infrastructure is linked to maintenance strategy, that is evolving towords innovative systems for structural monitoring.

Dam surveillance is one of the cornerstones upon which dam safety is built, and it encompasses: visual inspections; instrumentation, topography, and other campaigns; monitoring operations of discharge and hydrometeorological data; data management; plus behavior monitoring. Dam owners should be able to assess the condition, performance, and behavior of their dams, monitoring the potential failure modes. In addition to the fundamentals, the speakers mention the latest technologies available.

• Piezometer and inclinometer measurements during a bearing capacity test of a diaphragm wall

Leen De Vos

For the design of a diaphragm wall, embedded in the tertiary Boom clay, a load test was performed on 4 diaphragm panels, using 2 Osterberg cells per panel to introduce the loading into the diaphragm wall. Underneath and next to the panels, (in-place-) inclinometers and piëzometers were used to measure the movement of the soil close to the panel and the pore water (over) pressure due to the loading. Both push-in and fully grouted piezometers were placed and the results will be discussed..

• Monitoring deep excavations in urban areas. Case studies and lessons learnt

The presentation will deal with geotechnical monitoring data obtained in several years following as scientific supervisor the monitoring activities of the underground excavations in the urban area of Napoli. The main activities are related to Line 1 and Line 6 of the underground network and the deep excavations are those related to the famous Art Stations, which are stations designed by famous international architects with the aim to requalify the urban tissue of the city. These stations are mainly below the ground surface but are open spaces where the art is spread everywhere.

• Distributed Temperature Sensing for erosion detection, sand dune migration monitoring and DoC estimation: the Peru LNG experience in Ayacucho and Ica departments

Since 2010, the Distributed Temperature Sensing monitoring system (DTS) of the Peru LNG pipeline has detected hydraulic and eolian erosion. A thermal analysis of the monitoring data allows the estimation of the Depth-of-Cover. These results show that the DTS not only enhances the efficiency of the integrity program detecting and localizing natural threats, it also improves and rationalizes the maintenance activities as focused surveys can be conducted.

In the Infrastructure Management area there is ARGO, that is an innovative, fully integrated and certified system, with an asset management system as its core (based on IBM Maximo), that aims to collect and manages the structural data of the assets (e.g. bridges, overpasses, overpasses and viaducts) by integrating inspection, structural monitoring and maintenance activities to allow continuous management over time and identify critical issues.

ARGO has the structural heath monitoring as one of its main components, and it allows to quickly define configuration, get data from sensors with different kinds of visualization, process data with professional structural analysis algorithms, log data or send relevant information both to the asse management system and to the users with an alert dispatching system. The platform allows multiple and mixable sensors acquisition (accelerometer, strain/load cell, tilt meter, LVDT, environmental sensor, camera, laser, optical fibers…). The main goals of the integration with the monitoring system are to enforce structural safety both in ordinary and exceptional conditions (natural events and / or anthropogenic events), to optimize the maintenance processes and evaluation of the effectiveness of the strengthening works and to have a “real time” snapshot of the state of the structures.

A scalable IIoT architecture has been defined to face the different scenarios, and it handles LoRaWAN newer sensors and already installed, multi protocols existing sensor sets. Leveraging on an hybrid cloud solution, with openshift and AWS and with a full integration with the asset management system, it allows to

- have a seamless integration with different field gateway
- manage data coming from a very big amount of structures
- dispatch data with dependable brokers
- store raw data on AWS
- compute algorithms and rise alarm from the IoT platform

• The Observational Method Made Easy

Construction industry has a poor track-record on delivering projects in budget and time. 9 in 10 projects experience cost overruns and 40% of the cases directly relate to lack of understanding of ground behaviour. Risk of failure during construction and operation is also linked to geotechnical uncertainties, causing service closures, increasing maintenance costs, and endangering life and property. Plus, Climate change (Horizons challenge 01 & Eurocode7) exacerbates the need for leaner designs and carbon footprint reduction. The construction industry deals with geotechnical uncertainty mainly by increasing design dimensions (over-designing), and monitoring structures and ground during construction and operation to compare actual against predicted behaviour. Back-analysis is the process where model parameters are changed until an improved match with monitoring data is achieved. Back-analysis is traditionally performed manually following trial-and-error. Back-analysis typically lasts 3-6 weeks when performed by experts. By this time, construction has frequently progressed, or expensive mitigating measures have been implemented without benefitting from the experience acquired through back-analysis. Therefore, accelerating back-analysis to near real-time has the potential to transform geotechnical practice if coupled with highly skilled specialists. DAARWIN is a cloud-based platform based on machine learning algorithms created by SAALG Geomechanics to assist stakeholders to improve the management and analysis of ground data analysis as a leverage to make construction projects more efficient, safer, reduce construction overruns, and more sustainable. Basically DAARWIN is the Observational Method Made Easy.

• Fiber Optics: beyond data for seismological detection

Since a decade, time metrology has used coherent laser interferometry over telecom fibres to compare atomic clocks and disseminate high-accurate timing. The technique exploits a precise control of the fibre optical phase noise induced by vibrations. We have successfully reversed the paradigm: we can detect vibrations on the fibre at an unprecedented sensitivity, and detect seismic events with fibres on land and on the bottom of the seas, where there is a lack of traditional seismographs.

The second day of Field Trip, on 22nd June 2021, will be dedicated to the experimental field of Acuto Prenestina quarry, planned and designed by the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Rome "Sapienza", as part of a Project of Excellence funded by the Ministry of University and Research. The experimental field addresses, among others, the quantification of the rate of irreversibility of deformation deriving from the diurnal action of continuous and impulsive forcings. This is possible through an integrated multiparametric and multisensor continuous monitoring system also integrated with physical experiments and numerical modeling.
